英語での表現を英語らしく書くために（2008-05-14）

日本人の我々にとって、微妙なニュアンスの差というのはわかりづらいものです。
その一方で、must=have to、should=ought toといった単純な暗記を山のように覚えます。では、こういった中学高校時代に一生懸命覚えた同じとされる類のものは実際に英語を使う際に役に立ったでしょうか。少なくとも私にとっては全く無意味なものでした。
本書では実際によく使う単語や熟語を取り上げています。これだけでも、とても意味のあることだと思います。ですが、この本の醍醐味は、一見日本人にとっては同じように感じられる表現、たとえばperform と carry out、resign とstep downの違いを実例を挙げつつ説明していることにあります。本当に英語を使いたい人は、是非読まれることをおすすめします。
なお、同筆者による姉妹書の『英単語「比較」学習帳』も同じような問題意識で書かれた好著だと思います。

A Must for Those Who Cope With Practical English（2008-05-12）

I must say this is one of the most grand-breaking books I've ever read! It impressed me quite a lot that Kelly Itoh briefly and clearly indicates subtle differences between 2 or 3 synonyms most Japanese English learners missed. I bet nobody can see this sort of subtlety in any dictionaries and references. You'll catch the depth of the words and idioms you have never thought of. So I'm sure you will build up your vocabulary more efficiently and eliminate notorious, stilted and turgid English you have dealt with at Jr. & Sr. high school!
