A: Here at Kaetsu-Ariake we've been really excited about our returnee English program. Within the returnee English program our goal is to keep the students striving for excellence in their expression of thoughts and ideas through English, just as they had been doing while living abroad. We expect our students to not only keep on par with their grade-level in the English speaking country that they had lived in, but to even push over and beyond the expectations they faced while living abroad. The small class size of the English returnee program here at Kaetsu-Ariake allows us to accomplish two important things. First, we are quickly able to see and work on the specific language problems of each student. This is something that would be impossible in the student's English class abroad, as well as at other returnee classes that have large class numbers. Second, we are able to constantly challenge each student specifically to speak and express their ideas within one class period. Allowing us to not only focus on proper English, but also on thinking through their ideas, and giving solid reasoning and support for their ideas; all in English.

Q: 現在担当している学年で実際に指導されている内容をお答えください。

A: Currently our returnee English program has two points of focus. The first point focuses on the proper use of the English language. Building the students' vocabulary and ability to use English properly and clearly through analyzing reading assignments both orally and through writing exercises. Along with constantly improving the students’ vocabulary, we also introduce and encourage the use of new grammar points and idioms to help with the students’ fluency. The second point focuses on the humanities. This class helps develop the students’ critical thinking skills in English. The students explore a wide range of topics from current events to arts and history, and learn to express their thoughts and ideas on these topics based on solid reasoning and evidence found in their research. Subsequently, the students also can become very comfortable using a computer in an English environment. The students conduct research on the internet, learn how to write up professional reports, and even give power-point oral presentations.

Q:最後にこれから帰国してくる生徒にコメントをください。

A: Overall, we hope to show the students how to use the gift of a foreign language that they have already been so lucky to have. It is not merely a subject in school, it's an entirely unique tool that can allow them to explore and participate in a world that they otherwise may have not ever seen.
